English never dies

It is said that English never dies, does it? In Faculty of Letters in some universities such as UNISBANK where English is taught as a major, the number of students is getting lower and lower. It is very hard to get new students. Many high school graduates prefer to study Economics, Computer Science, Management and many more... but not English as a major.

While, it is arguably true that those studies need English as a medium of teaching materials (textbooks). Most of the textbooks are in English; though few translated versions are also available here in Indonesia. But, the textbooks were originally written in English

Are there ways of English Department to survive? Yes. Upgrade the library, improve the teaching performance, simplify the administrative routines,  set up the self-access center, and finally provide the students with certified soft skills in order for them to English as a means to an end, not an end itself.

It is true that English in Indonesian High Schools is considered a difficult subject, especially with regard to the fact that many students fail in the English national examination.

Meanwhile, many other Indonesian students have managed to get admission to overseas universities (America, Australia, Singapore, and many more...). But mostly they use English as a means of communication and attending lectures in English; they do not study English literature or pedagogy in order to be good English teachers. Why?
